At present, we have eight people in our band, so why are we called ‘The Five Farthings’? Because we originally hail from St Martin’s church in Epsom where we are tower bell ringers as well.
Oranges and Lemons says the bells of St Clements,
You owe me five farthings say the bells of St Martins.
This means that we can do some change ringing in addition to tunes, but we won’t go into the arcane exercise of change ringing here.
We have 37 bells covering three full chromatic octaves, all cast at Whitechapel within the last few years.
Some of us ring four-in-hand, but the bass bells are too heavy for this and we usually ring them off the table.
